I don't think there is a contradiction between (a) supporting the progressive Venezuelan reforms, and (b) warning against mistaken evaluations of it. The process should be supported, but we should not imagine it to be more developed than it actually is, nor independent from the world totality of relations. Some socialists however are overcheering it both ways.

One can easily be misled by the picture on the SWNZ-blog of an anarchist holding a banner "neither Bush nor Chavez". At least I found it very very confusing (almost even rude) of SWNZ to add this photo to the comments, suggesting this slogan supposedly sums up the position taken in the lengthy RedRebelRanter comments. However, after reading the comments, they clearly show the support for the Bolivarian Revolution, and show what actually does widen the space for it to continue further, secure and go beyond. It is absolutely absurd to present this position as "Venezuela is a non-issue" or as "neither Bush nor Chavez". (Come on! As if IST-comrades ever took the similarly absurd positions of "neither Pinochet nor Allende" in 1973 and "Chili is a non-issue"!?)

Keesjemaduraatje (above) is a known right-wing bigot, actively campaigning against muslims, with a hatred for anything leftist.
Don't let it spoil a good discussion.

in fact the Bolivarian Revolution in Venezuela shows more and more socialist characteristics, as Chavez is now trying to forbid the free-press and is taking contrl over more and more parts of society. The comparison with the Soviet-revolution is no nonsense.
Now the agricultural companies should be collectivised and the other companies nationalized and the hunger and poorness can start doing their work. Good chance that he will throw out the Trotskist as a next step. I would suggest to flee to Mexico, for historical and traditional reasons.

Just noticed this comment from a pingback on my blog. I am not really interested in a lengthy reply but do want to clarify one thing. I did not view Sandinista Nicaragua as "socialist". It was a mixed economy. The most revolutionary thing about it was a rebel army in power, just as was the case in Cuba in 1959. Unlike Cuba, the geopolitical circumstances did not favor a transition to socialism. My thoughts on this can be found at:
